Looking for Kosher Butcher around Silver Spring, MD

Having recently moved to downtown Silver Spring, I am looking for a kosher butcher in the area. I rely mostly on public transportation to get around, but I do have access to a car. +1 for any suggestions relating to kosher restaurants and kosher food markets, as well. Thanks!

You're about a half century late for good Jewish food in Silver Spring. AFAIK, your best best is Snider's Supermarket, on Seminary Road, visible on the left off Georgia Ave, just before the you get to the Beltway. If a mile and change from downtown SS is walking distance for you, you won't need a car.

Response by poster: I know Snider's and they certainly have good food and a nice, local atmosphere, but the deli has very little kosher meat or cheese. Any other suggestions?

I'm afraid I've shot my bolt. But why don't you call the nice folks at the Parkway Deli (301-587-1427) another remnant of old Silver Spring, and ask them. Better yet, walk down there, also about a mile, and nosh.

There's quite a large kosher store/butcher/deli out GA ave in Wheaton. It's a bit of a walk from even the Wheaton metro, but it's the best in the area. I wish I could remember the name of it.

Bear with me, I'm going to try and describe where it is, although it's been so long since I've been out that way that I've forgotten all the street names. Someone else may be able to come in and supply them. Anyway:

As you drive out GA ave, past Sniders, past the beltway, you begin to approach Wheaton Plaza. There's a road (Viers Mill) that veers off to the left right at Wheaton Plaza. Stay right on GA. Pass the Safeway on your right. At the next stoplight, or the next one after that, take a right. The store is immediately on your left, in a little strip mall. It's quite obvious. If you're on GA and you've gotten to the school or the Wheaton library, you've gone too far.

Oh, I would guess that it's about 5 blocks from the nearest subway entrance.

Thanks poppo, it was depressing to not remember the street names! I was thinking of Shalom, which is the store right next to Max's.

Mmmmm. Max's.
Best. Pastrami. Ever.
Must go there for lunch today. /uncontrollable urge/

Don't know if this meets your criteria exactly, but there is an Halal Butcher in Four Corners. I can't find the address immediately, but it's on Colesville Rd just north of University Blvd. Email me if you need more...

Response by poster: I know of the Halal Butcher in Four Corners.. Unfortunately, Halal is not kosher and does not meet my needs -- thanks anyway.

Shalom's (which is next to Max's the kosher restaurant and owned by the same guy) and Shaul's are the big ones that the Orthodox people go to. A subset of the Orthodox also go to Katz's, but there's a dispute among the community whether Katz's is kosher enough for them.

Best answer: Welcome to the neighborhood!

If you want more recommendations, call the Jewish Information and Referral Service, a service of the Jewish Federation of Greater Washington. Here's a list of kosher butchers from their site. I'd still call them, though, because the site might not be up to date.

Yes, welcome!

Max's is a short walk from the Wheaton Metro. Like two blocks.
