Just how big is Moldova?

I've been hearing a lot about Moldovan wines lately, and I was curious about how big Moldova is, so I tried to look it up. Much to my surprise, there appears to be a fair amount of disagreement, with a huge range of different answers depending on where you look.
The World Bank says the population is 2,663,251 (2019)
Encyclopedia Britannica says 3,022,000 (2020 est.)
CIA Factbook - 3,323,875 (July 2021 est.)
BBC News website - 3.5 million
Worldometers and data.un.org - 4,033,963 people at mid year according to UN data (2020)
Does anyone have any idea why there's such a huge discrepancy?

There's also the issue of Transnistria, a breakaway region whose status in relation to Moldova is unresolved; some population estimates for Moldova include Transnistria (c0.5m population), some don't.
Here's an explanation of the statistical backstory: posted by Klipspringer at 2:47 AM on June 3, 2021 [25 favorites]
