Did the IRS receive my payment?

When the IRS rejected my extension request today, did it keep my payment?

Today, on time, I requested a filing extension and authorized a full tax payment from my bank. I did both operations in one Turbotax (TT) session.

Shortly I received notice from TT that the IRS had rejected the extension request, but with no mention of the payment. TT noted that this is not unusual and advised me to submit the extension request half an hour later. I did so, but I didn't duplicate my payment authorization.

I then received a TT notice the IRS has accepted my second submission, but no mention of payment.

So I have 2 questions:
1. When the IRS rejects a filing (in this case for extension) does it automatically reject an accompanying payment?
2. How can I learn officially whether and when the IRS has received my payment?

Naturally this is time-sensitive since today is the deadline for filing 2020 taxes.

This might be a question for your bank. Have you checked your account?

Call the IRS. They might be particularly busy today, but they are very good with customer service and answering questions.

Your account summary on irs.gov shows your account status, including Total Amount Owed and Payment Activity. (If you haven't created an account there yet, do it before an identity thief does.)

LOL, no they are not. They just hung up on me for the past 3 months - I couldn't even wait in the queue. And for the years in the past that I called and visited the local agent office (they mess up my taxes every other year), it was a huge waste of time and completely unhelpful.

The website is ok, but there are only like 3 statuses for taxes best as I can tell, and it will just say 'received and being processed' for a very long time, and then processed in one day, so you will check them for months with no change and then they will process and will get your payment/refund. So that's not real helpful either.

The IRS is very helpful on the phone outside of the month taxes are due, in a normal year without a pandemic where 300 million people are not expecting checks from the IRS, before budget cuts reduced their staff.

There is a bug in Turbo Tax where you submit your return and it gets rejected. I have this happen to me and after several attempts I search on their support site and found the workaround which worked for me. Sorry I do not remember what the workaround was, but it was fairly simple. I vaguely recall it have to do with email addresses

Response by poster: Thanks all. The IRS has received the filing so that issue is moot. Bookmarked tman99's link.
We'll see what happens on the EFT. If it takes a month to resolve, the worst is a few bucks late fee.

Your request was not processed as a payment it is usually processed separately. The payment goes in as estimated tax payment. Your request will be processed for name address ssn etc info. If anything in the request was out of kilter from last year like a new name, decedent on a joint return, or the payment wasnt sufficient etc it cant get processed. You need to contact the IRS directly. They have forms at the library or a Taxpayer Advocate office .Called VITA.. or call 800-829 1040 for a call center.
