Therapists for QTPOC?
September 30, 2020 4:57 AM   Subscribe

How can I find an independent, online therapist with some expertise working with QTPOC (queer, trans people of color), or who has some of those lived experiences, and who is licensed to practice in Pennsylvania?

Therapist doesn't have to be QTPOC or trained specifically to address these identity categories, but just have some kind of intersectional experience and training. Kink-friendly candidates are a plus, as is experience working with high achievers.

Online only, but please no online therapy platforms like Talkspace in the wake of their privacy violations. Also welcome recommendations of specific places/groups/practices.

Recommendations or self-nominations very welcome if you want to reach out privately: brisesoleil@protonmail.com

You may already know about this resource, but the only way I've had success finding a therapist apart from the times I saw an intern at the LGBT center in the place I was living was through the poly-friendly professionals directory. It seems like they list a number of PA-based therapists. I'm not even poly at this point in my life, so to speak, but this has easily been the best way of finding an appropriate therapist for me. Psychology Today is just plain bad for when you're looking for particular kinds of 'competence', I guess you'd say. Good luck, I know trying to find a therapist when you need one is a tough thing.

Walnut Psychotherapy Center in Philadelphia focuses on queer people and has some therapists who are POC. Per their website they are currently doing everything online.

There is a directory, and it looks like there are at least a few in PA. There's the QTPOC Mental Health facebook page, though the organizer (who's awesome) is currently dealing with their own mental-health challenges so it's on a bit of a hiatus. They run the Rest for Resistance website, which has other articles on advice for finding therapists and general peer support and advocacy.
