Name that book, and a real shot in the dark

This is driving me crazy, but I remember reading a book as a kid, with a character that was some kind of intelligent (orange, I think) slime, who maybe would turn into human form.

I think it was quite intelligent, and maybe was actually a lot of tiny cubes? This could be totally wrong, but I think it would wear like, a fedora or sort of noir-ish private eye clothes. I'm not sure if the slime entity was the main character. I think it was science fiction for kids/young adults, and most likely from the 80s or 90s. If it rings a bell for anyone I'd be eternally grateful, it's been gnawing at my brain for weeks and I can't figure it out.

Not ringing a specific bell but my gut is leaning to Bruce Coville.

Best answer: Interstellar Pig maybe?

it's not an answer to your question - but checking out the "literature" subsection of Tv Tropes pages has been really helpful for me to find things like this if I can remember something specific enough! Maybe your answer is in there?

A million thanks for coming up with the title, prewar lemonade, because I definitely knew that I knew this but I couldn't remember the title! My brother and I *loved* that book when we were kids. I wonder if it holds up?
