MacBook 2017 is not charging?

I have a refurbished 2017 MacBookPro and for some reason for the past three days it has not been able to charge properly.

I do not know if it's the charger or the ugreen USB adapter for the charger, hand held mouse, and UBC stick. I also recently updated Catalina, and not sure if that is something to do with it or not. I tried holding the ugreen USB adapter, but it would not charge. What should I do?

I would, in this order:
Check the port: Check to make sure there's no fluff or goop in the charger port, and carefully clean it out if there is
Check the power source: Try a different outlet in case it's a problem with the outlet, extension cord, or power bar
Check the adapter: Post in my neighbourhood FB group to see if I could borrow someone else's charger from their porch

I'd add:

If you haven't already, restart. I also have a 2017 MacBook and I've sometimes had issues with it not properly charging that went away when I restarted. I dunno why.

I also have one port that just will not charge anymore, and one that is ... fiddly. It's not because they're dirty. I think that they have just been used so much.

This happened to me, and it turned out to be the power strip. So nthing plug in somewhere else.

This is a weird one, but I've seen it work before. Reset SMC (the System Managment Controller). Instructions in the link.

SMC has, among other things, some responsibility for power management (that's a complicated and only partially true statement.) If SMC gets messed up, a reset frequently magically fixes things.

Try plugging the power into the right side. Apple Fanbois might want to look away...

Apple Fanbois might want to look away...

Not to get to much into it, but don't believe everything you read on the internet, especially when "experts" tell you about "one weird trick" about your Apple hardware/software.

Ok, to get into it, just slightly: For years and years, people have had a fundamental misunderstanding about what kernel_task CPU usage means, so anything that uses it as a evidence of whatever they think might be happening is based on that misunderstanding. Ergo: don't believe everything you read on the internet.

I don't know if this happened in later models of MBP, but if you have an Li-ion battery I would see if it might be a swollen battery. My mid-2015 MBP had one.

Someone favorited my comment. Just in case anyone else comes across this, I have an update. I took my Macbook in for service because my issue with the ports not charging/connecting has been getting worse. They did some tests and found all four (!!) are failing. The guy said it's "rare", though I wonder how rare it really is...

They quoted me $110 to replace both sides. That's not as bad as I feared. Annoying, certainly, and I shouldn't have to pay it, but it's not a disaster. It's also something that they can do in-store, instead of having to ship out.

And another update to avoid misleading anyone: The in-store fix didn't fix it, and they ended up having to replace the logic board. Total price $493 after tax. Completely wiped my computer too, but I was able to restore from Time Machine without tooooo much hassle.
