Magical Realist Book featuring South American Maroon Communities

A friend of mine is about to start teaching about maroon communities and I remember a recommendation on NPR Books or Slate that talked about a magical realist novel in the last five years that sounded really cool. I searched for quilombos and went through the NPR list of books for the last five years through Concierge and couldn't find it. Little help? I know it's written by an American author in English.

Best answer: Are you thinking of Wayétu Moore's She Would Be King? Moore is Liberian-American.
