What are your favorite emojis? And how do you use them? Are they used to represent emotional states that are not explicitly named otherwise, or other meanings you are conveying?

I started back in the early aughts with old school Korean texting emojis

V(^_^)

But now I am playing around with social media more, for obvious reasons, and have not quite figured out how to use the array of emoji options. This 538 list of top 100 emojis is dominated by smiley/frowny faces and hearts. ๐Ÿ”ฅand ๐Ÿ’ฏ are too influencer-y in my view. What's your emoji m.o.?

Here's some I use a lot that I don't see other people use much:

๐Ÿ†’ and ๐Ÿ†—
I use these like you would use "cool story bro."

๐Ÿ™ƒ
I use this when I have to convey info I think is stupid.

๐Ÿ˜—๐Ÿ‘Œ
Chef's kiss. Perfection.

๐Ÿ’
You're welcome but I shouldn't have had to help you with this in the first place.

๐ŸŒˆโญโญ
The more you know.

I'm a big user of grimacing face ๐Ÿ˜ฌ Emojipedia says it may "represent a range of negative or tense emotions, especially nervousness, embarrassment, or awkwardness (e.g., Eek!)." I typically use it to represent a grim appreciation of the situation.

I use the comtemplative one a lot to indicate "hmmmmm..." ๐Ÿค”

I use the thumbs up probably way too much for general comprehension of something. I like it better than the alternative where people just write 'K'. (short for 'okay') ๐Ÿ‘

Also a big ๐Ÿ˜ฌ fan. To me it either means "yikes" or "whoops my bad" depending on context.

๐Ÿ˜ is my "I am presenting you with this information but I do not like it" face.

๐Ÿ˜Ž is reserved for my dad. ๐Ÿ˜Š

๐ŸŽ‰ is a sarcastic "yay"
๐Ÿค— is a real "yay" (jazz hands!)
๐Ÿด means "I'm changing topics"
๐Ÿ‘€ means "I can't believe this nonsense" or "wtf"

My top use emojis are probably as follows:

๐Ÿ˜‚ - laughing super hard, situational ridiculousness
๐Ÿ˜Š - awww or a humble thank you (like in response to a compliment or expression of friendship)
๐Ÿ˜‘ - "I can't even"
๐Ÿ˜ญ - crying tears of joy (like when someone does something overwhelmingly kind) OR like everything-sucks-overly-dramatic crying at the state of the world (depends on context)
๐Ÿ˜“ - actual sadness at something personally terrible
๐Ÿคท๐Ÿปโ€โ™€๏ธ - whatevs #notsorry
๐Ÿ˜’ - are you serious rn or #notimpressed
๐Ÿค” - can mean actual thinking/inquisitiveness or sarcastic inquisitiveness
๐Ÿ˜ฃ - something is annoying or inconvenient
๐Ÿ˜ซ - something is the literal worst
๐Ÿ˜ฌ - awkwardness, embarrassment, or just like witnessing a train wreck
๐Ÿคค - any discussion of yummy food
๐Ÿ™„ - eye roll, pretty self explanatory
๐Ÿ˜ค - annoyance or feeling huffy about something

I also use any of the hand emojis to mean their sign (like thumbs up, fingers crossed, etc), and if the discussion is about cats, then I use the appropriate cat emoji. My texting circle and I pretty much stick with the first few pages of emojis for the most part. I think emojis help so much in conveying tone and important non-verbal communication over text!

I use that smiley face with hands to indicate a hug. I thought that was universal!

Ok emojis and reaction gifs are the best

My most used trio is ๐Ÿ˜ฉ๐Ÿ™Œ๐Ÿ‘Œ which I use to express my love for something delicious (pizza, Chris Evans, etc)

๐Ÿคท - shrug
๐Ÿคฆโ€โ™€๏ธ - facepalm - either when I'm stupid, or someone else is
๐Ÿคจ - skeptical
๐Ÿ˜† - hahaha
๐Ÿšฎ - when I think something is trash
๐Ÿ˜ฌ - awkward, despair , "yikes"

This topic! ๐Ÿคฉ๐Ÿคฉ๐Ÿคฉ
I like to say that emoji are the hieroglyphs of our age ๐Ÿ™ƒ

I often use ๐Ÿ™ƒ for โ€œthis is funny to me, but I donโ€™t expect you to get itโ€ or โ€œoh wellโ€ itโ€™s very flexible.

๐Ÿ™ˆ - whoops, haha
๐Ÿ˜ญ - too _____ (funny/cute/sad)
๐Ÿง/๐Ÿค” - taking something too literally to make it a joke
๐Ÿคจ - excuse me??!?

I get pretty granular with my emoji expressions while texting, and use them frequently in casual texting, or to react to a story someone is telling me. Maybe itโ€™s annoying? ๐Ÿคท๐Ÿปโ€โ™€๏ธ But itโ€™s the best I have to replace body language ๐Ÿ˜…

I use the cat faces when Iโ€™m feeling extra playful/casual ๐Ÿ˜ธ

๐Ÿ™†๐Ÿปโ€โ™€๏ธ๐Ÿ™…๐Ÿปโ€โ™€๏ธ - yes/agreement and no/do not want
๐Ÿ’…๐Ÿป - punctuates sassy comments in gossip (semi-sarcastic, since Iโ€™m not femme)
๐Ÿคช - laughing at myself
๐Ÿคข - โ€œi fucking hate thisโ€/stressed
๐Ÿ™Œ๐Ÿป - โ€œyay for thisโ€

On Instagram I use emoji as paragraph breaks, and use ๐ŸŒฑ when Iโ€™m posting on my art account to say โ€œIโ€™m a tender shoot, but Iโ€™m growingโ€. I donโ€™t care if anyone gets the meaning on it, itโ€™s meaningful to me.

Dig in, take your time, and find a few to make your own!

I still use emoticons :-)
But I do think everyone should be aware of the Big Lebowski retold wholly in emoji. https://www.esquire.com/entertainment/movies/news/a35195/big-lebowski-emojis/

This is the best AskMe.

Also, everyone should read rather be jortingโ€™s โ€œdusty stickโ€ link above.

Here are the emojis I use the most:

๐Ÿ˜„ thatโ€™s funny
๐Ÿคฃ totally hilarious
๐Ÿ˜ฌ yikes
๐Ÿ˜ฑ how horrifying
๐Ÿ˜ก that is infuriating
๐Ÿ˜Š aww/modest thank you/Iโ€™m content
๐Ÿ˜ that makes me mildly unhappy but oh well
๐Ÿ˜ฎ holy shit
๐Ÿ˜” Iโ€™m sorry/sad for you
๐Ÿ˜˜ affectionate goodbye (can be platonic)

A smile with an upturned, pointy nose. If you could see my nose you'd understand why. :^)

Things I haven't seen mentioned here yet:
I use the upward pointing hand ๐Ÿ‘†or sometimes the arrow if I need to clarify a message I just posted eg "๐Ÿ‘†that's a linkto an article about x"
I also often respond to a message with a matching emoji for example if my sister tells me that her dog just killed three rats, I will respond with ๐Ÿ€๐Ÿ€๐Ÿ€โ˜ ๏ธ
