Food options; Christchurch to Arthur's Pass (and return)?

What food options are available on the route from Christchurch, NZ, to Arthur's Pass? If we prefer a place to relax, even for a light meal, are we better off choosing a different daytime outing?

I have good memories of the Yello Shack Cafe in Springfield.

Hmmm. Not much past Springfield, and not much in Arthur's Pass either. I'd take a packed lunch and lots of snacks, and enjoy a picnic.

There is the Sheffield Pie Shop which is delicious! It's even closer to Christchurch than Springfield, but you could always do take-away for a picnic.

Response by poster: Thanks to all. It appears that best option might be to pick up pies from Sheffield and take for picnic meal at Arthur's Pass.
