SharePoint, so basic I'm embarassed

How can I upload a file from my computer so it becomes the latest version of an existing SharePoint document?

If I simply upload my doc, it becomes a new line in the list. But I want to consolidate it as a version of the existing SharePoint document. That's the idea, right?

I know how to open the existing document, edit it, and close it so it becomes a new version. I suppose I could make that a workaround. -- delete its content, paste in the content of my computer file, and close it as a new version. Seems a little clumsy ...

Also: Looking for recommendations on end-user guides & info. Quick, free, and online right now, but I also welcome any advice on books.

Testing with SharePoint Online, either dragging and dropping or using the Upload menu item with a file that has the same name resulted in a new version of the file in the document library. I was asked to replace the file that was there but that just results in a new version.

If it's the same file type with the same file name in the same library, Sharepoint will ask if you want to replace the existing document. If you say yes, your desktop version will become the newest version of the document (you will lose version history on the desktop version, but retain the sharepoint history).

I was tripped up by a problem that you might encounter...I would drag a replacement version of a file from Windows Explorer into Firefox on the SharePoint web page, and then when I click on Firefox (i.e. switch away from Windows Explorer), no upload seemed to be happening.

In fact, a pop up had appeared, asking if I wanted to replace the file, but I couldn't see the pop-up because it was behind the Windows Explorer window. When I clicked on Firefox, the pop-up disappeared. However, there was still a little button in the SharePoint menu, on the upper right. Hovering over the button says "Show Error". Clicking the button re-opens the pop-up, which says "A file with this name already exists. Would you like to replace the existing one?" If I click the "Replace" button in this pop-up, then the upload proceeds.
