Flowering tree ID!

Botanists and dendrophiles of Mefi, can you please help me ID a beautiful flowering tree I saw? I just saw it in Berkeley, CA (Mediterranean climate, zone 9b) now in the springtime. It was about the size of a (small) cherry tree but the flowers were white, maybe tangerine-sized, and have a really interesting folded/downward petal arrangement.

I believe each flower had four petals, but each petal was folded back on itself so they all come together with the tips at the bottom, forming a sort of little balloon-like cage, IIRC. Googling just brings me cherry, dogwood, magnolia, all of which this definitely wasn’t. Any ideas?

Definitely sounds like the handkerchief tree, there's really nothing like it. I can't stop taking photos of them myself.

Best answer: Was it this kind of dogwood? Cornus florida urbiniana? Another photo
