Where did my subfolders go? Windows 7 Edition

I have a folder that contains subfolders, and sub-sub folders. (Think: Projects-->Subprojects-->Subsubprojects) But when I open the subproject folder, my sub-subfolders are no longer there (that I can see). It just shows me a list of all the documents in the folders. That's thousands of documents, many of which have similar names. I need my subfolders to show. Anyone know what to do?

I was out on parental leave for 12 weeks and my computer went through a lot of updates, but this one is kind of catastrophic. I can't organize or access years of my work. I need those subfolders. WTF happened to them?

Things I have tried: Opening the folder from various places (docked bar, Start menu, attaching from Outlook). When I look at the Properties of the documents that are supposed to be organized into Subsubfolders, it is clear that those subsubfolders still exist in the Properties, they are not erased. Just all thrown together in a big soup.

This could be a Library display issue. Can you get to the folder from the drive folder structure? (C:\users\[you]\....)

Best answer: Set Arrange By: to Folder to get rid of the soupy nested view. This setting is distinct from the View/Sort settings/order within a folder.

@snuffleupagus has it right. Navigate to your "subproject" folder in Windows Explorer. Look at the upper-right corner, there should be text that says "Arrange by" with a dropdown menu of choices. It might say something like "Date modified" or "Name". Select "Folder", and you should see the view that you're used to seeing.

You might have to do this for each subfolder, or all of the child folders may adopt the view of their parent - I don't know what upgrades have hit your computer, so it may be one with lots of havoc, or minimal havoc.
