looking for a history of plagiarism

I'm trying to remember the title and author of a book I once read about plagiarism. My recollection is that I read this in the first half of the 1990s and it was a fairly recent book at that time, so probably not published before 1980.

The book included a number of case studies of incidents of plagiarism in history, and one of the recurring themes was how the plagiarists tended to get bolder and bolder until they were found out. It was written more for a popular audience than for any sort of specialist. I remember it as being from a major publisher and having received favorable reviews. It's possible that it was not just about plagiarism but about academic or intellectual fraud in general, but if so plagiarism was a significant part of the book. Any suggestions?
