How to get iPad to stop losing place in videos

My iPad, using the TV app, frequently forgets what I've been watching, and when I re-select it, it has forgot where I was in the TV show or movie. How can I fix it?
I've tried googling this, but it's hard because of the lack of language specificity on what I'm talking about!
For workouts, I sync my iPad (9.7 iPad Pro, running iOS 11.4.1) to my Mac (Mac Mini running High Sierra). I use the TV app to play the downloaded videos.
Frequently, TV app forgets what I was in the middle of playing and when I reselect it, it forgot where I was in the TV show or movie. It's not a big deal, but it's annoying!
I suspect it has something to do with iCloud trying to synchronize watched/unwatched tags and place within a video.
I'd be happy to just disable this feature, but I'm not sure what to do...
