Describe this Siding

What term would you use to describe the wood siding on this garage built in the 1960s? The siding has vertical surface holes running the same direction as the grain. What kind of wood could this be, what caused the holes, and is there a term describing wood with this texture?

Best answer: I used to live in a house that had the same wood on an exterior wall and it was called pecky cypress. The holes are caused by a fungus that invades the tree while it's alive (once the tree is cut the fungus dies). It may also be referred to as wormwood.

Best answer: Pecky Cedar also looks like that. As the webmistress says, it's caused by a fungus.
