Sit your ass down right here.

For 20-40hpw, I sit at my dining table to compute—in a garden variety hard wooden dining chair. Tiny furnished rental. Can’t change the chair, so what is the optimal cushion for butt and back support?

Believe me when I say this is my only option. Also, I do work elsewhere at a standing desk another 20 hpw. That’s not an option at home. I eat breakfast, then set up at the same table my dual monitors and stands and work away in an ergonomically correct seated position, butt notwithstanding. It hadn’t been much of an issue until I took on a big new project. Now the hard wood of the seat is becoming uncomfortable. What do I need for comfort and good posture and back health—besides to get up and walk around the block as often as possible? A wedge? A donut? I don’t ever lean back in the chair, so nothing needed behind me. Please share your links and chiro-style recommendations, thanks!

I’ve heard good things about this positioner.

I'm not sure how tall you are, but there are ways of adjusting your workstation height and chair height without changing workstation or chair. Consider an ergonomic footrest. I have just a cheap IKEA one, and it really does help me maintain better posture, which is giving me less hip / butt pain. You can also consider raising your workstation with books or other flat things. This link has some good basic outlines for the angles and distances you want to aim for, and you can choose cushions or other adaptations based on those recommendations.

Long term you want to increase the muscle tissue so that there is more thick strong tissue between your bones and the chair. It's probably starting to hurt not because of the time sitting, but because of the time not exercising and keeping your muscles strong.

Short term, a folded blanket. A blanket is extremely adjustable, customizing like no product on the market.

Response by poster: Thanks everyone. I went with the folded blanket option for the short term. Better than the hard wood chair. I looked at the positioner recommended by tilde, but ended up ordering a cushion that looks exactly like the one episodic links to, this one from Amazon in the US. With Prime it was $15 shipped (nuts). Cushy coccyx memory foam cushion in a gray microfiber cover. Super cush for the tush. Just what I needed.
