5.1 speaker set up doesn't like waveout

Having upgraded to 5.1 speakers, I find my sound occasionally dying and requiring a reboot...
I didn't change my soundcard hardware, just plugged in the 5.1 speakers. They work fine, but sometimes sound will just stop working - but only for some applications. I think I have identified the problem to be with waveout - anything using Directsound still plays, but anything using waveout doesn't - so the Windows XP sounds don't work, but Winamp does (now that I have a Directsound plugin).
How can I either stop this from happening, or set Windows to only use Directsound?

Response by poster: Yep, and I still have the problem.
