Librarian fail

I need to find the number of black residents of each state, for each year 1997-2014. Sounds easy, but everything I can find is either not broken down by state or is too new. Are you good with demographic data? Then please come in!

The US census of course is only going to give me data from 2000 and 2010, and so far I can't tease this data out of ACS. I've also tried other more specifically black-focused projects and Pew without any luck. Anyone? I keep thinking I must be missing something.

I'm a librarian and this is for a faculty member. I feel like a bad librarian today. Please hope me.

I'm certain the Pew Research Center has this data. They would be analyzing US Census data, but they have it broken down by year.

Best answer: Argh, I found it in Stat Abs right after I posted this question.
