Hoverboard recommendations, please

Kid wants to use his money to buy a hoverboard; I want to make sure he gets a decent one. Seeking guidance.

My kid, who will be 10 in a couple of weeks, wants to buy a hoverboard. He has almost enough of his own money to get one in the $200-$250 range. I am concerned about the quality of hoverboards in this price range. The Wirecutter's recommended board is $400, but the review is a year old, from when they were just coming back on the market after the exploding-battery brouhaha, so I don't know if that's the cheapest acceptable hoverboard or reflects an immature market.

So: If you know of a good-quality hoverboard that won't be a waste of his hard-earned money, let me know. If you know enough to say that good-quality hoverboards in this price range don't exist, let me know that. If you have a source of reliable information about hoverboards, that would be helpful as well.

Hi!

1. Hoverboards don't explode. Not normally. I think those videos were a hoax.

2. They are all basically the same. Some have different little tires or features or speakers or bluetooth, but I'd just get the standard kind.

3. I'd buy on amazon if possible.

4. Since the fad is pretty much "over" - I'd definitely check the used market. It will be scraped up (they get scraped up in <15 minutes of use) but that's okay!
