I've been looking for this and haven't been able to turn it up, and it's the kind of writing that could save some lives this summer. Prominent in it was the author's surprise at being so much at the mercy of the various currents within the river, which might have been the Kern River, maybe Tuolomne, maybe some other.

This sounds like a blog post I read a year or two ago on the YOSAR page (the blog of Yosemite Search and Rescue) that focused on the high number of drownings in the valley. Could that be it?
