No frills, canvas backpack that folds flat!

Hivemind: I'm looking for a small, good look'in backpack that folds flat and can be tucked into my main travel pack (Timbuk2 Command, which is only 32L) and then be used as a day pack. Please recommend away!

I've seen all the iterations of this-- foldable backpacks that are made of very thin nylon and have a very sporty/toursity look, and am decidedly not into that.

I am far more interested in things like the Fjallraven or the Baggu. These are not marketed as foldable backpacks, but they have thin straps without unnecessary padding and are meant to used as a normal backpack. What are some other options along these lines?

One of these bags by Mystery Ranch might suit your needs. A friend that travels a lot carries the Summit all the time, and often throws it comfortably into her tiny carry on.

It's a messenger bag, not a backpack, but I like my waxed cotton bag from Aerostitch They come in a few sizes and colors, fold flat, and are waterproof.

The plain canvas backpack from Muji would be perfect, if there's a Muji near you!

I use the Tom Bihn Daylight daily. When I travel, I pack it inside my main bag (a 26L backpack) for use as a daypack at my destination.

The Kanken folds flat, but you will have to remove the foam insert to fold the backpack in two.

I bought a shoulder bag from this Etsy shop and it looks like they have a new model of backpack. My shoulder bag is sturdy and well made.

Seconding the Kanken. Very well made and in a paralyzing variety of colors. There's a regular backpack and a smaller daypack version.

It's nylon BUT hear me out... get this Patagonia pack in black and use a seam ripper to remove the Patagonia label on the front.

I too wanted to avoid looking sporty and touristy but the bag in black minus the tag looks very Japanese utilitarian chic. I've received a ton of compliments when I use it as a tote or as a backpack.

I have the Fjallraven and use it daily, but I wouldn't recommend it for day trips as a backpack. It's not that comfortable and is surprisingly heavy (it's heavy canvas). As a bag for work though, I like it a lot.

Came to recommend the Fjallraven Kanken (the small one). They are so dead durable I've (mid-40s cis dude) considered getting one more or less exactly like the one I bought my six year-old daughter.
