I am looking for the most interesting living history events world wide - Living history or historic cultural events like Highland games, etc. Help me plan 2018 travel.

I've asked about some of the best living history museums - I am now looking to plan family travel for 2018.

I was originally leaning towards Scotland or Spain but really just about anywhere in Europe is on the table. While crowds for an event are unavoidable we also enjoy the countryside, nature, castles, good food, and finding solitude.

I've never been, but I've always wanted to go to Germany for one of their MANY Native American re-enactments. They seem to be as serious about it as Civil War re-enactors are in the U.S. And then you can enjoy one of the MANY nude beaches. Both activities seem like they would have a different .... flavor ... in Germany.

Note: The "Native American tribes" seem to be exclusively late-era nomadic Plains Indians, after the introduction of horses by the Spanish.

If I understand correctly -- you aren't just interested in historical re-enactments. You're interested in distinctive cultural events that have taken place for centuries. Is that right?

If so... I have always wanted to go to the Gloucester Cheese Rolling Contest but have never been. (WARNING: THE CHEESE ROLL IS UNMANAGED. YOU ARE ADVISED NOT TO ATTEND.)

That is not the only weird historic cheese event you can find in Britain in May. There's also the St. Briavel's Bread and Cheese Dole which takes place on Whit Sunday (May 20 in 2018.)

If you are willing to forgo the solitude of the countryside and visit London, you might want to book now for The Ceremony of the Keys at the Tower of London. It's already booked up through April 2018!

In Scotland, I have never been to the Edinburgh Castle Tattoo but I have heard it is spectacular. Note that it takes place during the Edinburgh Festival & Fringe which is itself worth attending -- but Edinburgh will be extremely crowded the whole time you are there.

As a Napoleonic re-enactor, I'm biased, but the annual M5/'History Comes Alive' Show at Spetchley Park Gardens (Worcester, UK) is always a cracking event. Multi-period - Viking, Mediaeval, Tudor, English Civil War, American Civil War, Napoleonic, Victorian, WWI, WWII, etc. - with several battles/skirmishes, and living history camps/displays.

This is our lot there one year, with BlueNorther and me in the ranks. Vive l'Empereur!
