Jones-ing for the sting of a cool, crisp raquetball...

Are there any organizations for Wall Ball enthusiasts in NYC or Westchester?

Or perhaps recommendations on where I might find a friendly pick-up game of grownups hurling tennis balls at each other alongside a wall.

I used to love playing this game, also called Butts Up, every day during recess in grade school. Lately I've been thinking about it a lot and everyone I mention it too acts like I'm crazy and claims they have never heard of it.

Then I see this article about Pegacide and the memories come flowing back.

If no groups exist, should I propose a Butts Up Meetup among interested MeFites? It's great fun and tons of exercise. Really. You don't stop running once you get going.

I don't know of any groups, per se, but I do know that people get together at the park betweek 47th ave and Greenpoint Ave. in Sunnyside to play handball.

A few friends of mine that I used to play wallball with (like a year ago, not when we were kids) live in Brooklyn now.

I could give one of them your email, with your permission. I'm sure they'd be really into playing.

If an adult male hits you in the head with a racquetball, it will hurt.

The first rule of Red Ass Club is that there is no Red Ass Club. At least, that's what my lawyer would probably advise you. Be safe!

This is true. We used to play using a tennis ball, and that still left some serious welts/bruises.

I played Ass Up for years, but stopped a couple years ago because, as TJH said, getting hit by someone who has a strong arm hurts like hell. Not just the aw damn, I got hit, maybe a bruise the next day type of thing, but if it gets you in the neck or the lower back of the head or the ear you'll be down on the ground in a second or two. I remember someone getting hit in the side of the kneecap hard enough that they fell sideways and were limping for a few days.

Not a fun game once you get strong enough to do damage.

I propose out of curiosity that we all name the names by which we played this game. It brings back memories, as I haven't played it since sixth or seventh grade...

For me, the regular version was called Sting, while the violence-free version we were required to play during school-sanctioned recess was Off The Wall. Butts Up was the name of the punishment for egregious fumbles or violations of the rule, but never the name of the game.

We also played a form of dodgeball where there were no eliminations, you just ran away when you couldn't stand being hit anymore.
