Looking for the perfect anniversary getaway!

My boyfriend (24M) and I (23F) are looking for an anniversary vacation spot in mid-September! I'm open to any commentary on my shortlist below and options I haven't considered.
We'll be there from roughly the 16th-19th. We're based out of Charlottesville, VA, and would like to stay within a ~7 hour drive in any direction. I'm open to places with cheap flights from DC. We're both young professionals who enjoy hiking, photography, travel, weird or unusual roadside attractions/sites/etc., craft beer, and good local food. I'm not interested in touristy resort towns. Somewhere romantic is a big plus.
We'd love to go to somewhere like Savannah, but seems like too far for this trip.
Bonuses but not mandatory:
-Beach or beautiful landscapes
-Kayaking
Places currently on my list:
-Charleston, SC
-Outer Banks
-Asheville, NC
-Lewes, DE

Nantahala Village seems to meet your criteria. Some of their cabins are rustic, but isolated and with great views = romantic in my book. Plus lots of mountains and watersports all around.

As a fellow young professional from Charlottesville, the first thing that comes to mind is the Delmarva Peninsula. It really is so different out there from the rest of Virginia, but at the same time close and accessible— if you want to do Savannah without driving to Savannah, that's as close as you're going to get.

A friend vacationed on the outer banks in Sept for years and loved it, but did get chased away by a hurricane at least once.

I grew up on the Outer Banks and it is a truly lovely place in September, but yeah, the possibility of hurricanes is very real.
