Websites for Backpackers?

Hi everyone, I'm traveling to Jordan this summer, and I'm interested in meeting other travelers while I'm there. The last time around people used couchsurfing.com to find events and places to stay, but it's been a few years and there doesn't seem to be much happening on that website anymore. Are there any new websites for travelers to find interesting events and cool people to go with? Thanks!

It's not new, but it may still be good: the Thorn Tree.

I've been to Jordan, so I tend to track it in the news. I'm wondering if the refugee situation has changed up some of the availability, or options for finding anything less formal than a hostel?
