Gift ideas for an electric bass beginner

One of my friends is learning to play bass, I've been helping him out with some basic stuff as I play guitar, but I don't know much bass specific stuff. It's his birthday soon, and I'd like to get him something bass related. Is there a book, a piece of kit or anything really that you'd recommend? The stuff we're going through is mainly blues/rock. Thanks.
Cool. I have been learning bass for 1 year or so and my suggestions are...strap, wide one for comfort, talkingbass.net is a great lesson site and he has a strap much wider than most, cant remember the name brand; book 2 (as he has played for a while)of any bass learning system with cd backing tracks and bass notation to read bass clef if your friend is interested in that; book by bass officianado Victor Wooten- called the Music Lesson - (his spirtual journey in learning bass, excellent insights into musicality and intuition); a stand to hold the bass when not in use.

The Vox amPlug is a brilliant piece of kit. It's great for headphone practice, and is indispensable when you can't use an amp (late at night or while travelling, for instance).

when I was a dashing young bass beginner, the Bass ace (similar to the Rockman which was for guitars) was a big help to me for practice. this seems to be a better, more versatile version

When I was learning bass I got a lot out of Carol Kaye's instructional materials, like How to Play the Electric Bass.
If he doesn't yet have one, a nice metronome is a crucial piece of practice equipment.

Seconding (any of) Carol Kaye's books ... they're so dialed in to practical knowledge that isn't really present in many other method books. She is a great teacher, and is the best-known unknown bassist in history -- your friend should look her up if they don't know her already.

Patrick Pfeiffer's "Bass Guitar For Dummies, 3rd Edition" is fantastic.
"Bass Tab White Pages" from Hal Leonard Corp.
Seconding a metronome, or a drum machine.
Not a fan of Carol Kaye as an educator, personally.
