Finding the kind of stuff Wes Anderson features in his movies?

I live in Toronto, and I am looking for the type of objects and props that Wes Anderson features in a typical overhead shot (retro-specific paraphernalia). I know these types of things are all over the place, but is there a dedicated type of store where I can find similar things? Even better, are there stores that rent these things out for a photography session?

Consignment or antique stores? They can vary widely so I will usually look at the pictures on their Yelp pages first to see if they have the kinds of things I am looking for.

Yeah, have you already been to the stores on west Queen West? Would start at Queensway and move east.

Etsy (if you need anything specific and are willing to pay more for it). If you don't need specific stuff, try thrift stores.

You might also let your friends know what sort of thing you're looking for -- a lot of people collect this stuff. You might not know who has a complete set of Blue Heaven and a copy of Phone Calls from the Dead unless you let people know you're looking.

Yeah, what you want is antiquing. Most of what I see qualifies as "stuff grandma had when she died that none of us want to keep." In central Ohio that means lots of farm tools, Hardy Boys collections, furniture dating from 1870-1985, and a shocking amount of WWII war mementos (one guy apparently "liberated" a six-foot-wide train emblem from the Nazis, and I still can't figure out how he got it back home.) Anyway, it evolves over time and depends on who's been dying in the area lately.

Also milk glass. And Hummel figurines.

You can probably find specific items on ebay.

There are a few funky vintage stores near the intersection of Keele and Dundas that have this sort of weird eclectica. Door Number Two, Williams, Art of Demolition and Smash jump immediately to mind.

All the Toronto Goodwill stores are closed.

Vintage props.com might be what you want although they're for industry. The Toronto vintage society has a good directory of stores.

The Value Village in Ottawa always had a good range of miscellaneous objects from the past 30 - 40 years. Perhaps the ones in Toronto do as well?

My girlfriend does a lot of work in film prop buying (in London though). A lot of what she gets comes from dedicated prop rental houses and eBay.

Morba!

it's a cool retro/antiques place on Queen St near bathurst, and I think I have seen a sign in the store that says they rent stuff for shoots.

There are more places on Queen W. down near Roncesvales. If you're looking for an insane pile of bric a brac, the Buy and Sell on the north side of St. Clair is worth checking out.

Try "Ethel 20th Century Living" at 327 Queen St E as well. (I'd link but I'm on the wrong device.) It has lots of what you're after and they rent to film shoots.
