How can I make a sliding door into sliding art?

We have a barn-type door which covers a small closet in our kitchen. I'd like to make it into a fun visual focal point and would love some ideas on how to do it.

The door looks a lot like this one but narrower. The door is flat. I would like to paint it with my own design to look like a cool piece of art, like these people have done. I could paint on the door directly, but I would love to be able to change out the art instead of having only one design. My best idea so far is to cut canvas the same height as the door but a few inches wider. I'd then put grommets down each side. Then I could wrap the canvas around the door and use the grommets to stretch small bungee cords or something across the back to hold it in place. This way I could paint other designs on other canvases and change them out fairly easily. Is there a better way? I don't have to use canvas. In fact, I'd love to be able to sometimes make it into a chalk board. Or magnetic! But that may be dreaming. Any ideas??? Thanks very much.

Washi tape has become a popular method for decorating doors. Can look as classy or fun as you dream up, is relatively inexpensive, and easy to change up or remove.

Could you get a large piece of foam core or luan, paint that, attaching it with command velcro strips, so you could change it out at will?

Simply paint it any color(s) you choose of magnetic paint
(example http://www.amazon.com/Magnamagic-Magnetic-Receptive-Wall-Paint/dp/B0007KRDK8)

Then place photos and art w tiny magnets.
