Iphone text and call alerts- with or without headphones? Iphone 6

I have a job where it is very important to answer my phone. I also like to use headphones, though I am prone to taking them off. If I use plug-in headphones, the ringer will sound but not text alerts. If I use bluetooth headphones, I can't hear any alerts unless headphones are on. How do I get my phones speaker to sound off with call and text alerts regardless of headphone use?

This doesn't answer your question, but dealing with this problem is one of the things that Apple Watch does very, very well. I never have my ringer on, and half the time my phone is in my pocket but I don't feel the vibration, and the other half the phone is in my purse. But I absolutely feel the vibration on my wrist when there's a phone call. Plus, you can see your texts on your wrist right away. Oh, and it tells the time.

I always have my ringer off and vibrate on, which works for me. But my Apple Watch and Mac also notify me, so it's rare that I miss notification.

I was missing phone calls with my phone (an iPhone 6) sitting on my desk next to my keyboard when it was on vibrate. Sometimes I had headphones on, sometimes I did not.
I asked around and was recommended to get a smartwatch. I ended up with the Pebble Classic (this was before the Apple Watch was released), and it's helped. There's a few different styles/kinds now, so you don't have to spend as much as you would on an Apple Watch if that's a consideration. I hadn't worn a watch for years (relied on my phone), and now I far prefer having a watch. It's reduced my need to pull out my phone for every single buzz I hear to find out it was for something that wasn't important right that second. It's possible to control what notifications go to the watch, so your wrist doesn't buzz for every.single.thing.
The LED thing would also work, but I know if my phone was in my purse (or if my phone wasn't placed on my desk ideally), I still likely wouldn't see it.

I'm not sure if I understand the question. If I have either bluetooth or plug in headphones with my iphone, I'll get the audible notification for both phone calls and texts in my headphones as long as the ringer switch on the side of the phone isn't silencing the phone. Do you have the volume turned all the way down for the ringer?
Do you want it to ring audibly from the phone even when you have headphones attached, but not in your ears?

Smartwatch is the way to go here. I got a fitness band that also receives notifications from my phone over bluetooth. It definitely works with regards to not missing calls/texts/etc - annoyingly so!
