Is there any known issues with Norton/Symantic and chat clients?

I have a writing forum on proboards, it has the qwebirc chat app on it and a new member can't get it to work, is it an issue with one of them?
This is what he sent me via email: (and no, I don't know why he doesn't just use chatzilla!)
"In FF, I have chatzilla installed and Norton safe site check as add ons but I went as far as disabling those as well and restarting FF. Also, use Symantec internet security w/ backup and have both tried allowing the site and disabling Norton firewall and symantec itself and there’s also a browser protect feature in this version which I disabled as well. Nothing seemed to work at all."
Is it Norton or Symantic and is there some about:config thing he needs to tweak to get it to work? Or does anyone have any idea what might be causing this. He tried using the forum chat at work and it was fine so it is clearly something at home.
(I have used up my Nano question to ask this!! I hope he's happy!)
