I'm making a winter coat. The instructions for the pattern I found online say to use a "double sided winter coating" and not to use a lining.
Is "double sided winter coating" a type of fabric? Is "coating" referring to the coat that is being made or is the fabric coated?
I'm assuming that the fabric I want is wool. Should I be looking for a different type of fabric? Is there another name for double sided winter coating? Is this what I should be looking for?

Best answer: Coating refers to the type of fabric used to make coats - it's a medium-to-heavy woolen fabric, usually with a brushed right-side surface. Since your coat won't be lined, it needs to look/feel nice on the wrong side. It's generally not coated with anything.
Yes, you do want wool. Something with mohair in it, for instance, might be too itchy without a lining.
I can't tell you if the Theory fabric you linked to would work, since I can't see the wrong side, but it is definitely in the right family of fabrics.

Best answer: Usually it means that you cut two of every pattern piece from two different types of fabric, making sure that on the second fabric the pattern piece is upside down. Then you assemble both coats and you insert one inside the other. As last step you finish the edges, usually by top stitching after folding in the raw edges.
It should become clear as you read the pattern instructions: memail me if you are stuck. I made a very simple one out of suiting wool, in a pattern with a shawl collar, and I wore that coat for twenty years through 3 pregnancies.
