Help with Freelance Audio Production Rates

I have been asked to produce audio for a business. The audio will likely be a :30 second commercial for radio, although the client is also interested in me creating audio content for their website. Is there a freelance scale for audio production rates that either includes the costs of pre-production, production and post-production or breaks out individual charges for consulting, idea development, scriptwriting, narration, adding music and/or SFX and editing?

Freelance rates vary widely with location. I don't have rates for the creative work you're talking about, but in Los Angeles, $200 an hour for editing/syncing music/SFX/layback is a decent rate for pro audio work. Whether you reduce that rate to get the generally much higher creative rates is up to you.

Best answer: The Association for Independents in Radio may be able to help: Freelance Rates for Podcasts.

You may also want this producer-podcaster agreement template.

Both of those come from this article, "What Should Indie Talent Charge Podcasters? AIR’s New Rate Guide Has Answers."

(Don't get caught up on the word "podcast"; this is still a really good guide.)
