What is/was this vaguely half-remembered obstacle course in Hawaii?

About 20 years ago, I visited a place on the Big Island of Hawaii, near the Mauna Lani Bay Hotel, that I remember as some kind of wooden/rock obstacle course. It was sort of a historical thing, not in use but one could at least walk by it. It may have been called a "proving ground." What was this place? (more inside)

My memories are vague and likely quite jumbled up with things I learned at the same time about the City of Refuge, but I thought that maybe mutinous sailors had to do this course and it was associated with Captain Cook somehow. The last time I was in the area, nobody knew what I was talking about and I was not able to find it so I wonder if it may be gone now. However, other family members do recall visiting the site, so I'm not completely making it up. Does anyone know if this still exists and/or what it is/was?

Any reason to suspect it wasn't a proving ground?
The one at Aberdeen has tactical obstacle course-type stuff, and the Yuma Proving Ground has a "Tropic Regions Test Center" in Hawaii.

Perhaps the Puukohola Heiau? That's the only site near the Mauna Lani that I can see being perceived as an obstacle course.

Response by poster: It was not any of those, but thank you! I couldn't have been a real military installation because we could just walk right by it. I don't think there was even a fence or anything. And it was walking distance from the hotel.

Does a big lava tube you can walk into sound familiar? Because this is the only park that I can see on Google Maps that's within walking distance of the hotel.
