What kind of hose do I buy for this outdoor spout?

This spout is outside the front my house. When it is turned on, water sprays out of the hole and the spout. What is this? What kind of hose should I buy?

Best answer: You mean it sprays out the square hole? I think what you have is a broken spout.

Yeah, that's a normal spout with a hole in it. Replace!

Agree with RustyBrooks. The spout is broken. That square hole in the side of the spout shouldn't be there.

Best answer: That is a ball valve. the way it stops water from coming out is that the handle is attached to a literal ball with a hole drilled through it. The damage to the body of the valve (the extra hole where water is coming out) was caused by water trapped in the ball when shut off freezing and expanding.

You'll want to replace it with a faucet designed for colder weather. they typically have a really long stem that goes back in to the house several feet, where it is warmer. This page has a pretty good illustration.

Response by poster: Neither my husband or I are handy people so a plumber is coming next Tuesday to replace it. Thank you so much!
