Help me identify this book!

My mom bought me a fantasy book years and years ago, and I remember reading it with her. I am guessing it was a relatively new book at the time, so my guess would be that it was published some time between 1985 and 1990....

I don't remember much about the plot, unfortunately. It was a fantasy story, and I remember the main character was a young man. Fire was involved - I seem to remember him walking through fire as some sort of initiation, and I think it hurt. I think maybe fire played another role in the story, but I'm not sure about that.

Unfortunately, most of the rest of my memories are more about the physical characteristics of the book. It was large (tall and wide) like a children's book, but I don't think it was a very long book (maybe 150 pages or less). The cover was blue, but had a large illustration on the front.

I know it's a long shot, but if you have any suggestions, I'd appreciate them!

Do you remember anything about the setting?

Response by poster: Hermione: I don't, unfortunately. However, I've been doing some additional searching since posting this (I'm a librarian, I couldn't help myself). I think that the book might be "Tales of the Kingdom" by David and Karen Mains... the cover art looks like what I remember. However, I'm not sure if what I remember of the plot matches up to any of the stories in that book.

Any chance it was Roald Dahl's "The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar"? The title story involves fire walking and also hypnosis with a candle flame. It's an old book but new editions were released in 1988 and 1995. I think my copy might have been blue, around that time.

Response by poster: Stacey: no, I don't think so - I read over the Wikipedia entry for the book and none of the stories sound familiar.
