Movie title eludes me ...

This is kind of vague (else I would remember it I suppose) but it was late 90s/early 2000s (?), with a separated guy with a young daughter (?), there is a fight with his wife at a gas station (?), somehow he meets a Kate-Winslett-ish character (pretty sure it was not Winslett though), and then they move somewhere north-ish and start to renovate/rehab an old house ... Thanks!

And the book is a lot better than the movie.
