Orb weavers come in a huge variety of colors and shapes, but they all make webs like that. Maybe it's this kind of orb weaver?

I think in OP's picture you're seeing the belly, so this may be a better picture to compare. I saw a reference that called the same species I linked "orchard spider" and wonder if it's not a "true" orbweaver.

This orchard orbweaver looks very similar. Orb weavers definitely are common in North Carolina.
