A couple of days in NYC

I'll be in NYC 6/19 to 6/21. Mefi has always been magic for my trips.
Hey, hi there, thanks for looking. I'm going to be in NYC Fri 6/19 through Sun 6/21. It is a very quick trip, and this guy I'm seeing (recently started dating, first trip together). He will need to work for a few hours a day. We are staying in on 29th St. I haven't been to NYC in a decade.
Is there anything special going on nearby? Are there any super duper must see things only a local or regular might know about? Meals not to miss? Something to avoid?
Snowflakes: one vegetarian who also doesn't drink alcohol, gay male couple, 40ish, one moved from India a few years ago, one lifelong southerner.
Relationship bonus: it has been a long time since I've gone on a first trip with someone. What makes this kind of thing special?

If you've never been to Governors Island, you've GOTTA GO. It only opened up about a decade ago, and only on weekends - it is now open year-round in summer, and the Manhattan ferry to the Island runs daily. And there is a shit-ton to do there - two historic forts dating back to the Revolutionary War, two different clusters of historic officers' housing (unfortunately you can't go inside all of them), lots of funky food trucks, lots of pop-up art galleries and shops inside some of the historic houses, a mini-golf course run by an artists' collective on the old parade grounds, an entire field of trees and hammocks...and incredible views of Manhattan, Brooklyn, New Jersey and the Statue of Liberty.
Take the ferry over, rent a couple bikes and explore. Or explore on foot (cars aren't allowed), grab a picnic, try to grab one of the hammocks and chill.

The Met has a great exhibit that we're going to drive from DC to see before it closes - it's a special one. I also want to see the Flying Tiger shop when we come up.

Can you specify what your interests are? Types of cuisine you like? Casual or fancy?

ooh, adding onto ersatzkat's suggestion - this is another exhibit running at the Met now that I just saw and really dug. It's sort of a joint collaboration between the Asian Arts collection and the Costume collection, and isn't so much about Asian Art per se so much as it's about "Wow, Western people seem to fetishize Chinese stuff, that's funky, isn't it?"

If you're into contemporary classical music at all, Bang on a Can's marathon is going on all day 6/21! Free admission and an excellent lineup.
It's also Make Music NY's summer event day, with tons of performances all around the city.

Response by poster: Hey joeyjoeyjoeyrj, I love wild, new and unusual in dining and other experiences. He is more reserved, prefers chain type restaurants (for consistency), likes sports (particularly cricket).
The other suggestions are great. This is why I ask mefi.

There's a mini Noshwalks happening on Sunday, June 21st. I think noshwalks are a great way to see a different side of NYC, but they may not meet your food needs.

There's this pretty thing in Madison Square Park, too.

The Madison Square Park installation is super cool in person. Bonus, the Big Apple BBQ Festival is happening right there this weekend! It's fun -- lots of BBQ in one place, if that's your thing, although it does get crowded. I think you can get a Fastpass sort of thing so you don't have to wait on line.

That's this weekend, holborne, not the weekend of the 19th.
