Outlook for Mac broke after latest Office update. Help me fix it.

Hi. I am lo-tech so please talk to me like a child. After installing the latest Office update, I have the same problem as everyone else; outlook is no longer working. I am very confused by reading through that and other similar threads. How do I fix this?

I'm using Office for Mac 14.5.0 on a Macbook Air running Yosemite 10.10.3.

The only fix I understood was re-installing the old version of Office but other people did this from their time machine backup. I don't have time machine set up. I think my original copy of Office was by download...but any details, like any numbers I need, would be in my Outlook inbox so I can't retrieve.

I don't know what exchange or MS365 are so I don't know if I am using them.
I'm wary of doing anything that deletes anything so if I need to delete folders etc, explain to me what I'd be deleting and tell me if I need to back something up first.
I don't understand any of the stuff about creating new identities.

Apparently there is a later update 14.5.5 but that still has other outlook bugs. After this last experience, i don't want to instal any more updates until someone tells me it's actually fine and won't break something else.

Thank you!

Best answer: I had the same problem, and reinstalling Outlook only fixed it temporarily. So far, the 14.5.1 update seems to have fixed the problem.

But this is the workaround I was using before, in case you want to try it:

1. Quit Outlook completely.
2. Open the Terminal program.
3. Type defaults delete com.microsoft.Outlook and press Enter.
4. After that task finishes, type killall cfprefsd and press Enter.
5. After that task finishes, start Outlook.

This workaround did not delete my emails, saved drafts, signatures, or calendar events; it only deleted my preferences. But of course, you should make sure your email is backed up somewhere. (In my case, my Outlook is hooked up to an Office 365 for Business account, so I knew I could re-download my emails if they were deleted.)

Response by poster: Yay! Thank you both. No more checking 6 different webmail accounts. Got my calendar back & social life is under control once more.
