Band name from the 1970s...?

This is a long shot but here goes. I am trying to remember the name of a band that would have released albums in the 1970s when I was in junior high school.

I remember the band name might have sounded vaguely French or fake French-affected. I think it might have started with a D or P. But perhaps I think of those initial letters because all I can think of when I try to recall the band name is Depeche Mode and Pere Ubu. It wasn't Depeche Mode, it wasn't any band that first appeared in the 80s because I began high school in 1980 and my memories of the album are definitely from jr high or earlier. It wasn't Pere Ubu either.
I already googled 1970s bands, albums that were best sellers in the 70s etc.
I vaguely recall there might have been an album cover with tragedy/comedy masks on it?
Does this strike any chords?

What genre of music?

Response by poster: It would have been pop music, maybe kind of bland new wave or just generic 70s pop.

Do any lyrics, even just a fragment, come to mind?

Response by poster: Sadly no. I vaguely recall that there might have been some kind of reference to emotion in the band name or album title.
OK, I'll stop thread sitting...

France Joli?

What years were you in junior high school? That might help.

This is a completely wild-assed guess and doesn't entirely fit, but I kind of connect Popul Vuh and Pere Ubu sometimes just because the names sound similar.

Keep thread sitting--these identify-the-piece-of-media kinds of questions are often answered when you try to give as much information as possible.

Besides name and song and album titles and lyrics and album covers (and the years you were in junior high), there's also stuff like likely national origin, instrumentation, number of members, male or female or multiple vocalists,

Response by poster: (And after googling: the white drama mask I vaguely recalled on the album cover was actually a mime.)
