Screw it?

I realize this is a long shot, but does anyone know what kind of mounting hardware I need to attach the Pottery Barn Lewis headboard to a standard metal bedframe? Do I need screws or bolts or what? And what size?

Bought this fancy headboard used on Craigslist, but it didn't come with any hardware. I currently have it propped up, but now I want to move the bed so that I won't be able to wedge it against the wall. I have a standard queen sized metal bedframe. I've looked at the screw holes, and there doesn't seem to be any measurement on them. The internet doesn't seem to know the answer to this question, and I tried calling Pottery Barn (both the 800 number and an individual retail store) and no one knows the answer. What do I need to buy to mount this headboard to my bed?

Best answer: It's almost certainly bolted on through holes on the bedframe. As for what size, you could measure the hole diameters and get ones that fit. For things like this, I usually don't measure, go to a hardware store and make my best guess, often buying bolts of different sizes so I can avoid returning to the hardware store if I guessed wrong. Bolts are cheap.

Call Pottery Barn's 800 number. They should be able to tell you the bolt measurement.

Response by poster: How do I measure the hole diameter? Also, can you explain it to me like I'm a person who has never used a bolt before other than in Ikea directions (because that's what I am)? Precisely what pieces do I need, and what tools do I need to use those pieces, and how do I use the tools on the pieces?

I called Pottery Barn's 800 number, as well as a retail store, as I mentioned in the question, and they could not tell me the bolt measurement or anything about what hardware was needed.

Thanks!

Best answer: Usually bolts, 2" to 3" long depending on the depth of the headboard. Also 3 of washers and a nut. All of this for each side. The bolt diameter depends on the diameter of the holes on your headboard/bed frame.

You want to sandwich the headboard between two washers and the bed frame between two washers. The last washer is a split locking washer or a castellated washer, these will "grab" the nut once you tighten it down so the nut won't work loose.

Look at this as an example. Imagine the shiny steel plate is the headboard and the black rails are your bed frame.

Tools needed are usually two wrenches, one to hold the bolt head from twisting while you turn the nut with the other wrench.

The other possibility I just thought of is that the headboard doesn't have any holes drilled into it for mounting.

In that case it's probably a "hook on" headboard. You're covered there too, since many companies make a "bolt on to hook" adapter. Like these.

In this case you still need the nuts and bolts, but much shorter ones - like an inch to inch and a half. Also you only need 2 washers to mount the adapter to the bed frame. Then you hook the headboard onto the frame.

Tools needed are still 2 wrenches.

Response by poster: No, there are definitely holes, I looked. Thanks!
