Help replacing the screen on a Sony RX1 camera

I recently purchased a highly discounted Sony RX1 that has a crack in the screen. I would like to replace it, but I cannot find a single thing online about how to.

Got an impossible discount on a RX1 with a cracked but functioning LCD screen. I also got this replacement part from the seller. He ran into the same issue as me and didn't want to futz about with figuring it out.

I can still use the thing with the crack, but I'd like to get this fixed if possible.

For reference, I've replaced multiple Samsung Galaxy screens and have a heat gun and tools... but Samsung phones don't retail for $2800.

Any help appreciated...

The Amazon seller that you linked to (for the LCD screen) says they provide technical support via email. Maybe they have documentation they can send you?

I found this video. Which is better than nothing. If it me I might call Sony up and see how much they would charge to replace the screen; when working on cameras/optics I'm always really nervous about trapping a lot of dust.

Response by poster: Thank you gregr!

That is a start, although after watching that video I'm pretty tempted to just deal with the crack. I cannot imagine by big, dumb meat hooks trying to deal with something that intricate...

If you're prepared to live with the crack, I'd advise you to get a protective film to cover the screen.

I've replaced a couple of camera screens in the past. Not a huge job, because in neither case did I have to do much more than unscrew the back cover and the LCD and do a straight swap. The little clips that hold the tiny ribbon cables in can be quite fiddly and delicate, but if you have good eyesight (or a magnifier) it's not too hard. Usually (this was the case with my Canon cameras) it's possible to access the LCD without having to expose any of the optics or mechanical components, so dust may not be such a concern.

But it doesn't cost anything to get a quote from the manufacturer. Failing that, if you have a reputable phone/tablet repair place near you, they may be willing to take the job on, as it's a very similar piece of work.

Best answer: After some googling, it appears that the rx1 and rx100 take the same glass screen protector.

so put one of those on, and now if it gets hit again it will shatter the glass protector, not the display further. This works GREAT on smartphones. The protector always, always shatters first.

if you don't care about it looking cracked, just put one of those on and forget about it and enjoy your good deal.

I mean after all, you said the screen still works perfectly... just chimp less, and enjoy the shots on your real screen at home. camera screens suck anyways, even when they're really nice like on the newer sonys.

And if you do replace it, buy one of those anyways. Seriously.
