Is there any way to get iTunes Wifi Syncing to actually work reliably?

iTunes WiFi Syncing seems to have worked around 3% of the time I've tried to use it. Any way to increase that percentage a bit?

I have an iPhone 5s and am running Mac OS X 10.9.5. My iPhone almost never shows up in the "Devices" menu of iTunes. Conversely, the option of "Sync now" almost *Always* shows up on my iPhone whenever iTunes is open, and it'll grey out when I quit iTunes and turn blue again when I open iTunes, so there's SOME sort of connection going on there. (Unfortunately, if I click 'Sync now', it just says 'Starting Sync' and then nothing happens after that.)

I've used this: http://osxdaily.com/2013/02/17/wi-fi-sync-not-working-fix-ios/ and it worked once, but no longer...

This seems to be a known bug in iOS 8, which I hope will be fixed in Monday's 8.1 update. I had no problems with iOS 7.

I haven't tried since 6 or so, but probably not. WIFI sync has always been spotty in my experience - windows or Mac, 3rd party router or Apple, firewall on or off.
