Side by side video

I have three vertical iPhone videos, each a few seconds long. I need to combine them into one video with the three clips arranged side by side, with no gaps in between, in the quickest and easiest way possible.
I have access to iMovie 11, which has a side-by-side feature (for two clips at a time only) but doesn't deal well with the vertical aspect ratio -- I can't see a way to do this without fat black bars between the clips.

If it were me, I might convert the videos to images (I think most video editors can do that easily, ffmpeg certainly can), combine the images with an imagemagick script, and then put them back together into a video using ffmpeg.
