I second Audacity. It is surprisingly powerful and easy to use. Plus it's Free (and free).

Definitely Audacity.

I like Amadeus much better than Audacity, but I like the fact that Audacity is free/open-source. Aside from some minor bugs in writing headers for .aiff files (so people tell me), Audacity is fine for how you want to use it. I find Amadeus a little less clumsy for most things, but it's not free in either sense, though there is a free trial.

I use MP3 Trimmer. Very simple interface.

Felt Tip Sound Studio is another worthy choice.

Peak is excellient.

I love Peak, too, but since I got SoundTrackPro, I hardly ever even open it any more. The automated restoration tools alone are life-changing if you do much audio work.

Granted, mentioning Peak or STPro is taking this OT, but anyone with a Mac and a growing interest in editing audio should check STPro out; it’s Apple innovation and elegance at its best, imo. And it’s much less $$ than Peak.
