Monitor display error

Monitor display problems: after attempting to change screen resolution by way of the Control Panel my girlfriend's monitor shows the following H: 30_70KHzU:50-120Hz, and the question, PC settings correct? Then shuts off...

It will not accept an answer to the question (pressing Y or N has no effect) the computer will not restart in Safe mode, or revert to previous settings. She is running Windows XP and is waiting for my phonecall to fix the problem. I have no clue as to what to suggest. Any ideas?

Mmmm, sounds like you've set your graphics card to display a mode that the monitor is incapable of displaying. That message is from the monitor, not from Windows, and it's telling you it can't handle the signal it's getting...

Reboot the computer, turn the monitor on, and watch the screen. As soon as you see some text on the screen, hit F8 a few times until Windows loads. It will ask you about Safe Mode. Choose Safe Mode. This will start Windows with a graphics setting that your monitor can display. Once Windows has started in Safe Mode, you can change the graphics settings to something the monitor can handle.

(I'm ignoring your statement about 'won't restart in Safe Mode' since you've given no other indication that there is some Windows problem; I think you're just doing it wrong.)

Just to add a bit to jellice, "something the monitor can handle" should be, in this circunstances, 800 X 600, 16 bit color (High Color in old WinSpeak), and both Horizontal and Vertical refresh rates safely low (most monitors deal well with 60Hz Horizontal). Afterwards you can try to change the resolution using the screen properties pane (and always checking the "Hide modes this monitor can't display" box in the Configuration/Advanced/Monitor tab).

Response by poster: It does ask about Safe Mode, though choosing it does nothing. The same message is displayed.

Best answer: on XP there is Enable VGA Mode on that F8 menu too. try that. it'll put it in 640x480@60Hz which should alleviate your problems (you can change the resolution when it boots). if your computer beeps on boot, start tapping F8 right afterwards.
