3D software

Recommend 3D animation software with scripting ability.

I've got a comp sci background rather than an art background, so the ability to create shapes and movements through scripting is a huge plus. Realism isn't so important, I'm going for a mid-90's look anyways.

Pov-Ray is an open-source, free piece of software entirely oriented in scripted 3d design. Animation wise, it runs slow, but steady. (link to homepage) I like it anyway.

Blender is nice and scriptable using Python.

3ds Max has Max-script, which was dead simple to learn for me, with no formal CS training, so it should be a breeze for you. Objects, functions, classes, etc.

Sketch-Up can be scripted in Ruby, and is one of the easiest-to-learn modellers around (though not necessarily the most powerful).

Blender uses Python, but the interface takes some getting used to (though if you have no 3d experience, that probably won't be a big deal).

FormZ has some sort of scripting, as does Maya.

Oh, and Blender is free, the others I mention aren't.

Maya is the god of scripting. Seriously.

Also, PRMan (pixar's renderman) is pretty much in the front of NPR rendering, and Maya comes with mental ray bundled now too. Complete is down to under $2000, afaik.
