Burned by Roxio

As part of my work, I need to extract clips from movies and burn them to a DVD.

Right now I use DVD Decrypter to extract the VOB files, convert them to AVI files and then use Roxio to burn them. Only the first step works with no problem. Conversion to AVI is a hit or miss pain, and sometimes Roxio simply will not accept the AVI files created anyway. Google gives way too here are many titles to be useful. Can someone recommend reliable software and end my woes?

i continue to preach the gospel of mencoder on metafilter :)

i've never tried it on windows, but supposedly it does work and it's one stop shopping to mpeg4 .avi files.

google for mencoder - its part of the mplayer package.

if your only problem is the burning process, I hear Nero now has DVD support. Try their trial version, first, see if that works out for you. It's always been the go to app for video cds in the past, so I can only assume that they've been maintaining that reputation into DVD burning.

Nero's site.

oh, and for conversion to avi... look for avisynth OR (if you want a far more robust but MIND BOGGLING interface,) the gordian knot suite of software that includes both DVD Decrypter and avisynth.

I had to deal with these issues when making my demo reel, so i'm familiar with what a pain it can be. my sypathies.

If you're burning DVDs to play in a regular DVD player, you should be able to just decode the VOBs and cut them. DVD -> cut -> DVD doesn't require any conversion, just some packaging.

Doom9 is the standard answer for any question like this. Their DVDR guides should have what you need.

It looks like you should be able to rip with DVD Decrypter, use DGIndex to demux the audio & video, and cut & remux with tmpgenc. Zero quality loss and no time waiting for it to re-encode. Then, use one of Doom9's guides to get it to a manageable form to burn for a DVD player.

Not easy, but it's cheap.

If you want to do something simple AutoGK makes Gordian Knot relatively painless. I'm an idiot when it comes to this video stuff, and I was able to get through it.
