External HD > Ubuntu > iPod - best media player?

I'm running Ubuntu 12.04, have all of my music on a portable hard drive, and ideally want to dump some of it onto an iPod. Is there a media player that will let me do this relatively painlessly?

I'm looking at both Banshee and Rhythmbox right now, but neither looks like a simple solution to this problem (if there is one).

I'm in a similar boat and use Clementine for music management and then separately use GTKPod to move stuff on and off the ipod. I'm sure there must be something better so I will follow this thread with interest. GTKpod is not that bad really--better than itunes, which isn't saying much.

Clementine should be fine for this. Connect both to your computer, add the music file on your harddrive to your list of library sources in preferences. Then check under the 'devices' tab and your ipod should already be there, double click it to open. Go back to the 'library' tab and you can decide to add whatever you want by right-clicking and 'add to device'. You can add multiple by ctrl-clicking or use shift if you want to add everything.

I have all of my music on an external drive - if there's a way to get Banshee to recognize and pull from this library, I haven't found it.
