Your Rocksmith is so unlike your Rock.

What open source games and learning resources are available similar to the game Rocksmith?

I would like to learn to play guitar and have a dusty background in music, having played bass for years. This is something I will be doing by myself and for my own pleasure. I wont be playing with other people or getting lessons with other humans. I will be using computer-based resources and lessons. What I am after though is this: I played around a bit with the game Rocksmith. I generally like it, though appreciate its limitations. I would like something similar but more open sourced. For example, users who have the mp3 of Raining Blood can play along with the game track user MetALPuppy arranged.

If such a thing does not exist or is not recommended, what other play-along computer resources can you recommend?

Best answer: You're correct, nothing like it exists outside of the commercial space. However, people have modified the current rocksmith game to support custom tracks on PC. Smithy anvil is the site to go to, but note that you'll need a forum account to see the download forums.

A new rocksmith is coming out very soon (called 2014 but coming out this month) that looks like a major upgrade to the current game which I'm playing and I am super psyched for.
